Don’t leave home without your sunglasses this summer!

What’s the one thing that you need when you’re driving in the summer? Sunglasses of course!

Since James Dean first epitomised eyewear cool as he cruised around in the hottest cars of the 1950s (he was extremely near-sighted and required glasses), sunglasses have been an essential travel accessory.

If you haven’t yet began to learn to drive (and we’d love to help you out with that), or are only at the early stages of learning to drive, you may not yet have experienced driving in the early morning (sun rise) or late afternoon (sunset) when sun glare can be a real problem, and even cause accidents!

Sure there is the built in sun visor on your car, but sometimes this can only do so much to block out the sun.

Investing in polarized sunglasses can help reduce glare, and so can leaving a spare pair in the car in case you get caught out, on the road, facing sun glare. Let’s face it. That daggy pair of your Mums left in the glovebox are not exactly going to cut it, even in a moment of dire need. There is street cred to consider people!!

From a more serious safety perspective if you find yourself squinting this summer whilst driving, leave more following room – the sun can make it hard for you to see what the car ahead is doing.

Other things which can help to minimise your chances of an accident occurring this summer while you are still in the early stages of learning to drive (and indeed well into the future and even as an experienced driver include:

Keeping your windshield clean, inside and out – be diligent about using the complimentary windscreen wipers available at most service stations, or invest in your very own set for home Check your windshield for cracks and if driving on gravel roads or roadworks, drive slowly and hold your hand to the glass to minimise any stones which flick up and which can damage it Avoid storing anything on the dashboard which may add to the glare If you’re having a difficult time seeing the road, use lane markings to help guide you.

And of course, if you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses outside of the car, it’s even more important for you to take the necessary precautions to have appropriate eyewear in the car at all times.

Happy and safe sunglass-wearing driving this summer!
