How to get the most out of a lesson

Intentional planning turns practice into progress. Use this structure to build skills efficiently and safely.

Pre-lesson checklist

  • Route: Choose roads that match the learner’s current ability.
  • Objective: Define 1–2 skills (e.g., lane changes, gap selection).
  • Conditions: Vary time of day, traffic, and weather across sessions.
  • Briefing: Review road rules relevant to the objective (e.g., merging, give way).

Coaching during the drive

Task breakdown

  • Explain: “What will you do first, second, and last?”
  • Visualise: Identify hazards and escape options.

Feedback loop

  • Specific: Comment on observation, speed choice, and road position.
  • Positive: Reinforce what went well; correct one thing at a time.

Progressive loading

  • Start easy: Low traffic, simple manoeuvres.
  • Add complexity: Multi-lane roads, roundabouts, night driving.

Post-lesson actions

  • Reflect: Ask the learner to self‑assess strengths and next steps.
  • Record: Logbook entry with date, duration, conditions, and skills practised.
  • Plan ahead: Set the objective for the next session.
