Adult driving lessons

Driving lessons for international and mature learners

You may be learning to drive for the first time, getting used to Queensland roads or making room for lessons later in life. We start with your experience and what you need.

Coastwide offers personalised driver training with patient explanations and time to practise. Our driving instructors work with adults whose circumstances and learning needs vary.

Trusted by Parents, Loved by Students.

International learners

Learning to drive in Queensland

You may not have needed a car before moving here. Driving can make work, school drop-offs and community activities more accessible. Tell us about any driving experience you have and the explanations that help you learn, including if English is your second language.

Mature learners

Learning later in life

A licence may not have been a priority earlier, or your personal or cultural circumstances may have changed. You don't need to apologise for starting now. We understand that work, family commitments and fewer opportunities for private practice can affect your lessons.

Our ten-point approach

What you can expect from adult driving lessons

  1. Build skills gradually

Confidence matters. Instructors introduce new skills as your driving develops, with dual controls in Coastwide lesson cars.

  2. Lessons shaped around you

Your experience, learning needs and goals guide the tuition. Adult learners do not all need the same lesson plan.

  3. Patient explanations

If English is your second language, we take time to explain clearly. You can ask for an instruction to be repeated.

  4. Realistic practice expectations

Private practice is not always available. Tell your instructor so they can account for this when discussing progress and lesson planning.

  5. Clear, adult conversations

We explain things thoroughly and speak with you respectfully. Needing something explained is part of learning.

  6. Involving your partner

A partner may wish to attend a lesson to understand the teaching approach or help with practice. Arrange this with us beforehand.

  7. A respectful learning environment

Cooperation and mutual respect matter. Our approach is calm instruction without yelling, rudeness or impatience.

  8. Practice in your own vehicle

Once your instructor considers your driving at a safe level, lessons can be arranged in your own roadworthy car.

  9. Useful start and finish locations

Ask about starting at work and finishing at a childcare centre, for example. Arrangements depend on availability. Children cannot travel in the car during lessons.

  10. Times that fit your commitments

Ask about lessons from 7 am, weekends and public holidays. Available times depend on your instructor and location.

We also work with employment, social, rehabilitation and migrant agencies arranging driving instruction for their clients. Contact us to discuss the learner's needs and practical arrangements.
