Queensland Government learner driver tips for supervisors
Good supervision is structured, calm, and focused on building safe judgment—not just passing a test.
Plan each lesson
- Objective: Select one primary skill and one secondary skill.
- Route: Match complexity to ability; avoid surprises early on.
- Brief: Explain the task and ask for a step‑by‑step plan.
Communicate effectively
- Clear cues: Short, timely instructions (e.g., “Check mirrors, then indicate”).
- Feedback: Specific, behaviour‑based (“Your head check was late at 50 m”).
- Calm tone: Keep emotion out of coaching to protect learning and safety.
Safety first
- Zero distractions: No phone usage while supervising.
- Contingency: Identify safe pull‑over spots along the route.
- Boundaries: Stop and reset if the learner becomes overwhelmed.
