Preparing for a Queensland practical driving test involves more than choosing a date. Your hazard perception test, logbook approval, driving readiness and access to a suitable car all need to line up.
If you are taking driving lessons across South East Queensland, talk to your instructor about test preparation early. That gives you time to work on any recurring difficulties and understand the booking steps without rushing.
Complete the hazard perception test
Car learner drivers must pass the hazard perception test before booking a practical driving test. You need to have held your learner licence for at least six months before taking it. TMR will email you when you become eligible if your email address is registered.
Use the official car hazard perception test information to check eligibility and access the test. Completing this step early removes one booking hurdle while you keep practising.
Finish and submit your logbook
Queensland learners under 25 generally need 100 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours at night, recorded in an approved logbook. If an exemption applies, follow TMR's requirements for your circumstances. Learners aged 25 or over do not have to complete a logbook.
Eligible driving with an accredited trainer can count as triple time, up to 10 actual hours or 30 logbook hours. A night lesson can count towards your night hours or as triple time, but cannot count as both.
TMR says to submit your logbook at least 12 business days before your test. An app logbook is submitted through the app; a paper logbook goes through Australia Post. Check the logbook submission requirements for your format and allow time for corrections.
Check readiness as well as eligibility
To progress from a Queensland car learner licence, you generally need to be at least 17 and have held your learner licence for at least a year. Check the full steps from learner to provisional licence, including any requirements specific to you.
Your instructor can help you assess observation, speed management, traffic decisions and manoeuvres. Completing the required hours matters, but your driving also needs to be ready for independent assessment. It is fine to spend more time on a skill that still feels uncertain.
