Build your manual driving skills

  1. Find the bite point

    Start with clutch control and smooth take-offs. If you stall, pause and let your instructor guide a safe restart.

  2. Practise gear changes

    Work on timing and gear selection while keeping your attention on the road.

  3. Add hill starts

    Practise using the handbrake and coordinating the pedals to move away without rolling back.

  4. Apply the skills

    Bring vehicle control together with hazard awareness, defensive driving and preparation for your driving test. The pace depends on your experience.

More choice of car

Manual and automatic on one car licence

In Queensland, a class C car licence covers manual and automatic cars; class CA covers automatics only. Passing a practical test in a manual is required to remove an automatic-only restriction. Licence-stage rules and other conditions still apply. See the Queensland licence classes and conditions.
