Control, observation and good habits

Five things to practise in automatic lessons

The car changes gears for you. Safe driving still takes attention, judgement and practice.

  1. Smooth acceleration and braking

    Practise gentle pedal inputs and controlled stops. Aim for steady control as traffic changes around you.

  2. Observation and hazard awareness

    Look ahead, check your mirrors and notice developing hazards. Keep scanning as you steer and adjust your speed.

  3. Safe following distances

    Leave space to respond when the vehicle ahead slows or stops, including in busy traffic.

  4. Road positioning

    Work on lane position and correct lane use early, so these habits develop alongside your car control.

  5. Structured practice

    Use lessons to identify what needs attention. Ask your instructor what to practise with your supervising driver between lessons.

How many automatic lessons will I need?

That depends on your experience, practice and progress. Fewer controls can make learning easier, but automatic lessons don't guarantee a faster path to test readiness.

If you're a first-time or nervous learner, tell your instructor what feels unfamiliar. You can discuss a pace that gives you time to understand and practise each skill.
