Fatality Free Friday 2022

Fatality Free Friday took place on 27 May 2022. Coastwide shared the Australian Road Safety Foundation's campaign to encourage safer choices by everyone using the road. The aim of a day without a road death was also a starting point for habits that last all year.

The date and campaign graphics below belong to that 2022 message. The everyday reminders are still worth discussing with the people you drive, ride or walk with.

Look out for people on foot

People walking have no vehicle around them for protection. Drivers need to stay alert to crossings and people near the road. When you are walking, choose a safe place to cross, pay attention and check the traffic before stepping out.

Before crossing

  • Put distractions aside.
  • Look and listen for approaching traffic.
  • Use a suitable crossing and check vehicles have stopped.
  • Do not start crossing on a red pedestrian signal.

If the pedestrian signal changes after you have started, finish crossing without delay. Read Queensland's pedestrian rules and crossing advice for different crossing types.

The figures behind the 2022 campaign

The foundation's 2022 campaign material reported 1,127 lives lost on Australian roads in 2021. The original infographic below includes 134 pedestrians and 227 motorcyclists. These are historical campaign figures, not the current annual road toll.

The total is recorded in the foundation's 2022 campaign fact sheet (PDF). Each number represents a person and people who knew them.
