Know the sign, know the limit

Understanding road signs is part of driving safely. The Your keys to driving in Queensland handbook is a useful place to check the rules, whether you are learning or refreshing knowledge from years ago.

Start with these four speed signs from our original article. Can you explain what changes when you pass each one?

Four speed-sign examples: 60, END 60, 40 AREA and END 40 AREA. Their meanings are explained in the text below.
The original handbook extract. Use the current handbook link above for the full rules; page references inside the image belong to the older edition.

Four signs with different jobs

60

The number inside the red circle sets the maximum speed in kilometres per hour. A 60 sign means no faster than 60 km/h. Conditions may require a slower speed.

END 60

The previous signed limit has ended and the default limit applies. It does not mean there is no speed limit.

40 AREA

You are entering an area of roads with a 40 km/h limit. Watch for any other limit that applies to a particular road within that area.

END 40 AREA

You are leaving the speed-limited area. The default limit applies unless another signed limit applies to the road.

Queensland's default limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h outside built-up areas, unless another limit applies. Read TMR's speed limit guide and regulatory sign explanations for the detail.
