Spring Driving Tips

Longer days can bring more opportunities to get out and drive. Plan for the conditions you actually meet, including glare, rain, animals near the road and unfamiliar traffic.

Spring is a useful prompt to check the car and refresh your observation habits. These are practical subjects to discuss during driving practice supported by local instructors, especially before trying a different route.

Look for animals and people

Watch for wildlife and livestock, particularly around dawn and dusk. Reduce speed when you see warning signs or animals near the road. Avoid a sudden swerve that could put you into another lane or off the road. See Queensland's guidance on sharing the road with animals.

Before moving off at home, look around the car for children and pets. On the road, keep scanning for pedestrians and people riding bicycles. Holiday traffic and unfamiliar drivers are reasons to leave room and be patient, rather than assuming others will do what you expect.

Give the car a seasonal check

  • Look at tyre condition and check pressures against the vehicle's guidance.
  • Check the lights, wipers and washers, and clean the glass.
  • Arrange attention for warning lights, unusual noises or concerns about braking.
  • Keep up with the manufacturer's servicing schedule.

Queensland conditions vary. A change of season does not mean every car has suffered winter damage, but it is a useful reminder to carry out the checks you need throughout the year.

Respond early to water and damaged surfaces

Rain and standing water can hide potholes and affect grip. Slow down in time and leave a larger following gap. Do not swerve into other traffic to avoid a hole, and never attempt to cross a flooded road.

Check the official wet-weather driving advice before a trip in poor conditions. If conditions become unsuitable for a learner, stop somewhere safe and change drivers. A practice session can always be continued another day.
