Queensland practical driving test preparation
Your practical driving test asks you to demonstrate safe driving while following an examiner's directions. Preparation means bringing together observation, vehicle control, road-rule knowledge and decisions you can make without an instructor prompting each step.
It is understandable to concentrate on the test date. Give equal attention to the driving you will demonstrate. With driving instruction focused on practical skills, you can identify recurring difficulties and work on them before test day.
Test preparation brings observation, vehicle control and judgement together.
What driving examiners assess
The Q-SAFE Driver Licence Assessment manual sets out the formal procedures and scoring. The areas below are a practical revision checklist, rather than a complete marking sheet or a prediction of your result.
Observation and awareness
Notice what is happening ahead, behind and beside you. Use mirrors and appropriate shoulder checks, and keep looking while you carry out a manoeuvre.
Speed and spacing
Recognise speed limits and adjust to the conditions. Leave room to respond to other road users, including when visibility or space is restricted.
Position and communication
Choose a suitable road position, follow signs and lane markings, and use signals correctly. Practise combining those actions at intersections and roundabouts.
Control and judgement
Manage steering, braking and other controls while making safe decisions. Parking and reversing require observation and judgement as well as getting the car into position.
These are also everyday learning priorities in TMR's guidance on driving experience and hazard awareness. Skills need to work together: seeing a hazard early is useful because it gives you time to respond.
Use preparation sessions to find what needs work
Tell your instructor where you still need reminders. A missed mirror check, uncertainty about a lane arrow or difficulty judging a gap is useful information. Describing it clearly makes it easier to plan the next exercise.
Practise familiar skills in a range of suitable situations. If you can park only in the place where you learnt, ask for another location. If a busy intersection feels rushed, discuss the approach while safely parked before trying it again.
Ask for feedback about your decisions as well as the final position of the car. A preparation drive can reveal patterns to work on, but it cannot guarantee a pass or the route your examiner will choose. Use our driving test preparation information to discuss the support available.
Check the documents and test vehicle early
For a Queensland car learner, the hazard perception test must be passed before booking the practical test. Learners under 25 also need the required logbook approved, unless an applicable exemption changes their requirements. Read the official practical-test instructions for your circumstances.
- Identification: organise your current licence and the identity evidence required for your situation. Check translation and medical-document requirements where relevant.
- Vehicle permission: confirm the registered operator permits its use for the test and have the registration number available.
- Vehicle condition: check registration, roadworthiness, L plates and suitability for the licence class. Review lights, tyres, mirrors, seatbelts and other items on TMR's list.
- Practical arrangements: confirm the test centre, appointment, car and any instructor meeting arrangements.
TMR inspects the car before the test. A vehicle that fails the requirements can prevent the test going ahead. Use the full test vehicle requirements well before the appointment, rather than relying on a quick check that morning.
If you want an instructor's car, coordinate that availability before committing to an appointment. Our South East Queensland test-booking guide explains those arrangements separately.
Give yourself time on the day
TMR asks you to arrive 20 minutes before your appointment. Listen to the initial instructions and ask about anything you do not understand before starting. During the test, the examiner cannot answer questions that would influence your driving performance.
Keep your attention on driving instead of trying to calculate a score after each action. If the outcome is unsuccessful, use the examiner's feedback to understand what needs to change and discuss that with your instructor. Needing more practice is a specific next step you can work on.
