Queensland road rules
In Queensland, you can only make a U-turn at traffic lights if there is a U-turn permitted sign. A green light or the absence of a no U-turn sign does not give you permission.
A right-turn lane and a green light do not, by themselves, allow a U-turn. Check for the permitted sign.
Look for permission, then check the situation
This is the sign that allows a U-turn at traffic lights. You still need to obey the traffic signals, check for other road users and complete the turn safely.
The U-turn permitted sign.
The same sign requirement applies at children's crossings, level crossings, marked foot crossings and pedestrian crossings. At those locations, do not make the manoeuvre unless it is expressly permitted.
See the Queensland Government's U-turn rules and examples for the official guidance.
When you turn, everyone else comes first
A driver making a U-turn must give way to all other vehicles and pedestrians. This includes vehicles facing a stop or give way sign. Make sure you can see approaching traffic and finish without obstructing its movement.
Check road markings and other signs too
Away from traffic lights, look for restrictions before deciding to turn. Do not cross a single or double continuous centre line, a continuous centre line on your side of a broken line, or a painted island in the centre of the road to make a U-turn. A no U-turn sign also prohibits the manoeuvre.
You can review what the signs mean in Queensland's regulatory sign guide. If you are unsure at a particular intersection, continue to a suitable place where you can change direction safely.
These are useful decisions to practise with patient driving instruction with Coastwide. Ask your instructor to explain the signs and positioning during a lesson, with enough time to plan the manoeuvre.
