Sharing the road with cyclists in Queensland

Queensland rules reviewed

When passing a cyclist in Queensland, leave at least 1 metre in a speed zone of 60 km/h or less, or 1.5 metres where the speed limit is higher. If you cannot leave the required space safely, slow down and wait.

The posted speed limit determines the minimum gap. Driving slowly through a 70 km/h zone does not reduce the requirement to 1 metre. A safe pass also needs clear sight lines, room for oncoming traffic and space to return without cutting across the rider.

This guide focuses on motorists passing cyclists. Queensland's minimum passing rule also covers personal mobility device riders, such as people using e-scooters.

Leave space between your vehicle and the rider. The minimum depends on the speed zone.

Allow the full passing distance

1 m

60 km/h or less

The minimum clearance when the road's speed limit is 60 km/h or below.

1.5 m

Above 60 km/h

The minimum clearance when the road's speed limit is more than 60 km/h.

Measure from the leftmost part of your vehicle, including a projecting mirror or load, to the rightmost part of the rider, bicycle or relevant trailer or load. The gap is not measured tyre to tyre. These requirements come from section 144A of the Queensland Road Rules.

The rule applies when you are travelling in the same direction, including when the cyclist is in a bicycle lane. It still applies if they move around an obstacle. If two riders are side by side, allow the distance from the rider closest to your vehicle.

Make the decision before moving out

  1. Look beyond the cyclist

Check the road ahead, approaching vehicles and any parked cars or rough edges the rider may need to avoid. A bend, crest or narrow section can hide the space you need. Give yourself time to assess it.

  2. Wait when the space is not there

Stay behind at a safe following distance. A close pass is not a solution to oncoming traffic. If you are unsure that the gap is enough, wait for a clearer opportunity rather than trying to squeeze through.

  3. Check, signal and pass with room

Check your mirrors and blind spot before changing position. Indicate right when moving out to pass, then left when returning after the cyclist. The indication is required when you change your position on the road, even if you remain inside the lane.

Queensland allows certain line crossings to make a safe pass: centre lines, including double unbroken lines, lane lines and painted islands. That permission depends on it being safe. It does not give you priority over oncoming traffic or permission to exceed the speed limit. See the official guide to sharing the road with riders.

Leave room for what happens next

A rider needs to move away from the kerb

A rough edge, debris or a parked car can make a rider's position change. Notice those features early and allow space. Avoid treating the kerb as a line the cyclist must remain beside at all times.

You are about to turn left

If a cyclist is ahead and travelling in the same direction, stay behind and turn after them. Passing immediately before the turn can cut across their path. Check for riders approaching from behind before you turn as well.

Two cyclists are riding together

Two riders may legally ride side by side provided they are no more than 1.5 metres apart. Assess the space needed to pass both, using the rider nearest you as the reference for minimum clearance.
