Queensland Government learner driver tips
Start smart: follow official guidance, prepare thoroughly, and practise purposefully to build safe habits from day one.
Before you drive
- Licence: Carry your learner licence every time you drive.
- L plates: Attach clearly at the front and rear, visible from a distance.
- Logbook: Keep it handy and record each trip immediately after driving.
- Roadworthiness: Use a registered, insured, roadworthy vehicle.
- Rules refresh: Review key QLD road rules before each session.
Supervision basics
- Supervisor licence: Must hold an open licence (for the vehicle class) for at least 1 year.
- Seating: Sit in the front passenger seat with a clear view of the road.
- No phone use: Avoid phone use while supervising; focus on guidance and scanning.
- Zero tolerance: Model safe behaviour—no alcohol, no distractions.
Lesson structure
- Plan: Choose a route that matches current skill level.
- Explain: Brief the task and ask the learner to repeat it back.
- Coach: Talk through the task step‑by‑step, then let them try.
- Feedback: Give constructive, specific feedback and repeat until consistent.
Reminder: Check TMR for any updated restrictions or logbook requirements.
