Bare foot driving, Is it legal

Feet, footwear and pedal control

For car drivers, the Queensland Road Rules do not set a specific shoe requirement. The important legal requirement is proper control of the vehicle. Driving barefoot does not remove that responsibility.

Your choice of footwear should let you operate the pedals reliably.

Control is the rule that matters

Section 297 of the Queensland Road Rules requires drivers to have proper control. Being allowed to drive without a particular type of shoe is not a guarantee that every footwear choice is suitable for every driver or car.

For lessons, we recommend comfortable, secure footwear that gives you a clear feel for the pedals. Check that you can move between the accelerator and brake without a shoe slipping or catching. If you remove shoes, put them somewhere they cannot move into the driver's footwell.

This article is about driving a car, not protective clothing for riding a motorcycle or moped. If pedal position or footwear feels awkward during our practical driving lessons with Coastwide, tell your instructor before you set off so you can check your setup together.
