Queensland licence guide

Queensland's Digital Licence app is available now, including for learner drivers. It gives you another way to show your licence details, with controls over the information you share. You can keep using your physical card if you prefer: the app is optional.

If you're learning to drive, sorting out your licence is one part of getting ready. Our driving school for Queensland learners can help with the practical skills while Queensland Transport and Main Roads manages your licence and digital identity.

Who can use the app?

A current Queensland learner, provisional or open driver licence is an eligible credential. The app also supports some expired, suspended or cancelled credentials for identification purposes. Having a credential in the app does not change whether you are legally entitled to drive.

Use the official Digital Licence information and download links to check device compatibility and eligibility. You do not need to wait for your licence renewal.

  1. Download the official app. Follow the Queensland Government links to the Apple or Google app store.
  2. Complete the identity checks. Follow the app's onboarding process and set up its security features.
  3. Check your details before relying on it. Allow time to resolve any access or identity issue before a lesson, test or trip.

The Queensland Government's learner licence guidance confirms that learner drivers can use the app to store and share their licence details.

Show the information that is needed

A verifier can scan the app's QR code and request particular information. Review the request before agreeing to share. You can also display the credential on screen or export a PDF copy. A PDF shares all the information in that credential, so check what the recipient actually needs first.

The app protects stored information and checks for updates when connected to the internet. Without internet access, it can use the most recently stored details. That is different from a promise that every change will appear instantly. See the official guide to using the app for sharing, security and troubleshooting instructions.

Keep your licence accessible

Queensland law allows the digital licence to be used in place of the physical licence. Learner and provisional drivers must still carry their licence when driving and show it to police if asked. The licence-carrying requirements continue to apply.

Charge your phone before you need the app. Keeping your physical card with you is a useful backup if the device fails. When travelling interstate or overseas, check local acceptance and take your physical licence, as Queensland Government guidance recommends.

For a practical driving test or another TMR transaction, check the evidence-of-identity requirements beforehand. TMR accepts a Queensland driver licence shown as a physical card or in the Digital Licence app, but your transaction may require other documents too.
